Marvel VS Capcom 3: Who Would You Pick?

So with the release of the new Marvel VS Capcom 3 looming near, a friend asked me who I thought should be included in the new Marvel roster of characters. No matter what we’re going to end up with the basics like Wolverine, Spider-Man, the Hulk, and Captain America. Deadpool has been added, and while I think that’s cool it was kind of a given considering the saturation the character has now across the movies and comic industry. Even money would have Venom , Magneto, and possibly Thanos showing up again. I did read that Dormammu is supposed to pop up, so that’s cool. Considering Marvel has hundreds of thousands of characters available to pick from though, it would be interesting to see some real new blood.

I read a phrase today that got me thinking.  Feministing posted a link about "How girls are socialized to be music fans, not critics."  The article it links to is interesting and well worth reading, although it's on a different tangent than the one that came to my mind.

Sea Bear & Grizzly Shark #1- Pretty fun with some great art, but this is an incredibly quick read for $4.99, although it is 48 pages without ads. This isn’t a book you’ll necessarily reread again and again though and it’s kind of a throwaway, so while it’s good for a quick laugh that’s about it. B-

Superman #700- The first story by Straczynski was alright, just sort of a quickie to catch up on Lois and Clark’s relationship post War of the Supermen. The middle story by Jurgens was cute, but a random thing to be included in this issue. The final story, well let’s say if it’s an indication of the type of stories we will be forced to read by Straczynski then I’m going to be less than pleased with the direction of this title. Seriously, we’ve had enough of ‘needing to ground the heroes with the people they save’. And that whole scene with the woman complaining that Superman wasn’t there to save her husband WHILE HE WAS BUSY SAVING THE WORLD is more than old hand and lazy plotting, it’s obnoxious and annoying. I can see why the Plutionan over on Irredeemable went insane. B-

Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes

How does one write a story about a god? This has been the central question of a large part of Neil Gaiman's work. He writes stories about incredibly powerful things, whether they're deities, legendary heroes or the keepers of secrets so important that they could unravel the very fabric of existence. Making a compelling narrative about even a partially omnipotent character is almost impossible. It's no fun to read about a hero who can't die, permanently lose anything of value or fall prey to mortal frailty. Perhaps that's why Gaiman's approach is so thoroughly postmodern. His gods are powerful, but they're also at the mercy of the very beliefs that surround them. It's this core of pop culture deconstruction that makes DC Vertigo's Sandman series so interesting.

Wonder Woman Barbie Kicks Ass

Wonder Woman BarbieWonder Woman BarbieBarbies were never my favorite dolls as a little girl, but Wonder Woman Barbie stands apart from the usual Barbie. I could never exactly relate to the blonde-haired, bimbo kind of Barbie and I truthfully never found Ken all that attractive- perhaps he was a little metro-sexual for my tastes?

Wonder Woman Barbie is a different breed altogether from almost every Barbie I've seen. Although she is priced to be a collector’s item at prices ranging from $45-55 and her figure is just as unrealistic as any other Barbie, I feel like she is someone that little girls could look up to- despite the fact that she is wearing not as many clothes as she probably should be, she is more than a fashion plate or an icon- she is a sign of female strength.

Chew Vol 2: International Flavor TPB-If you enjoyed the first volume then you’ll love this one. Layman and Guillory deliver another fun chapter in the messed up life of Tony Chu. The more I see of Guillory’s art the more I love it and Layman keeps offering up more oddness and great humor. Well priced package and something everyone should be checking out. A
