Mondo Urbano Book One- A great Pulp Fiction like mix of stories that merge three unique talents in Eduardo Medeiros, Mateus Santolouco, and Rafael Alburquerque. I’m becoming a huge fan of Alburquerque’s style so I was excited to hear about this project and it did not disappoint. A mix of strippers, drug deals gone sour, a cursed guitar, and plenty of other strange happenings make for a fun read. A solid deal too at only $11.99 for over 100pgs, well worth checking out. The Avengers #3- More of an action issue but an overall step up from the past couple issues. I really would like to see the actual Apocalypse pop up as a new Avengers villain instead of the usual Kang/Fill-in-the-blank/Ultron/Fill-in-the-blank/Kang cycle it feels we tend to get stuck in. One of the traps I always feel the Avengers suffer from is that they haven’t really dealt with many actual ‘big’ threats in their own title in a while. B+

Great looking trailer for the new DC Universe Online game. Hope there are more CG scenes like this throughout the game because this is one of the better superhero fights put together in a while.

Alan Moore’s Neonomicon #1- So the good news is you really don’t have to remember the story from the previous series Courtyard which came out years ago, which is great cause I’ve totally forgotten the entire thing. Which isn’t to say it was bad, but it does say it really didn’t leave a lasting impression on me which is odd for an Alan Moore series. I’ll probably pick up the new color trade and give it a good once over and reread this. For the average reader who just jumps on here, it’s a good first step into what’s probably going to be a really disturbing series. Worth checking out if you’re a Lovecraft or Moore fan. I’m only giving this a lower grade because I’m just generally not impressed with the $3.99 price tags Avatar publish everything at and then add a glut of variants to the market.

Stan LeeStan LeeThe San Diego Comic Con is underway. For those who do not know what the San Diego Comic Con is, its is an annual pop cultural event, a conference, convention, festival, fan performance art celebration. It is for fans who love comics, sci- fi movies and Tv shows, who love gadgets, gismos, and cool computer games. It is for the geek in us to speak -- speak? To scream with joy!

More than 120,000 strong are gathered. As usual, G4 (TV cable channel) will be covering Comic-Con extensively.

Featured on opening day at Comic Con was no other than he who is the rock star, he who is a legend, an American icon, he who is the godfather of the comic world, the creator of so many Marvel comics' fictional super heroes, he who is a real life hero, he who is a big draw at the 41st annual Comic-Con in San Diego -- Stan Lee. Ghostopolis-Doug TenNapel just knows how to write a fun quirky story. I haven’t read a book by him so far that I haven’t liked and Ghostopolis is no exception. Following a terminally ill boy as he’s accidentally teleported to the land of the dead by an inept government agent, TenNapel just throws together random concepts and runs with them and gives you some great characters and fun dialogue along the way. I picked up the $24.99 HC since I always feel like I get my moneys worth from TenNapel, but there is a soft cover alternative. Either way, check it out for a weird look at the afterlife or if you just want to try something a little different. A

Brody’s Ghost Book 1- I love Mark Crilley's work and think Akiko is one of the best comics the industry has ever produced, so when I saw the solicit for this I was pretty excited. The story follows a down on his luck slob named Brody as he discovers he has the ability to see ghosts, specifically a ghost girl named Talia who can’t make her way into Heaven until she performs a great deed. Determined to use Brody to find a serial killer, she has her work cut out as she needs to get him in shape to be of any use whatsoever. Crilley has a quirky sense of humor and has always been a solid storyteller who experiments frequently with his style. A good first volume introduction and at a decent price at $6.99 for 96 pages in a thin manga sized format. A-

Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine #2- Jason Aaron writes these characters together the way they should be written, and that’s without taking either of them seriously. Considering the amount of crap both of these guys star in it’s nice to read something that just has fun with them and embraces crazy concepts. Spidey teaching at a school for advance cavemen? Check. Dr Doom’s consciousness transferred into a giant planet? Check. Robo-Devil Dinosaur? Check. The Phoenix Force cast into a bullet and being shot out of Phoenix Gun? Check. Adam Kubert’s art compliments the craziness perfectly and this has just been a fun ride. A-
