Artist Feature: Clayton Crain

Clayton Crain is one of the few talents in the industry that can really pull off digital painting style without making it looked forced or too slick. He's also one of the few talents that can really pull off a messy yet simultaneously clean approach to his layouts, making things look murky in their gore yet also telling an easy to follow story.

Marvel Universe Vs The Punisher #1- If you’re in the mood for another super-hero/zombie mash-up series this one is fairly solid with a good script from Maberry and great art from Goran Parlov. Essentially a mix of 28 Days Later zombies and Crossed zombies (so a virus that makes people crazy cannibals but also thinking maniacs), this is a fun read but ultimately just another rehash of a trend that doesn’t know when to stay down. I’m not even talking about zombies, just super-hero zombies. Still, at least it’s well done. B
Nancy In Hell #1- Figured I would give this a try since Juan Jose Ryp can put out some beautifully detailed art. The premise is interesting enough and it doesn’t hide from being a slasher horror piece with plenty of demons, zombies, and other monsters hounding the main character after she finds herself waking up in Hell. The dialogue is a bit forced though and the art, while nice, is the same type of over-the-top gorefest we always see Ryp do at Avatar so while pretty it’s not really anything new. B-
Avengers Prime #2- I loves me some epic Alan Davis art. Story is fun, a lot more fun than I was anticipating because I don’t think mythology is Bendis’ strong point. I’m pretty sure the trade will be a stronger read simply because the publishing schedule for this book is too spread out for the quick scripts. But yeah, anything with such great art deserves to be checked out. A-
Brightest Day #7- For the readers who have been worried that nothing has been happening, finally a major plot point and foreshadowing! I really liked the quick flashes and alternating art styles for the White Lantern premonitions, and while I agree we could have seen this push a little earlier in the series I’m still enjoying it. B+
Baltimore The Plague Ships #1- I really need to read the actual Baltimore novel. I stalled because I’m not always the biggest fan of Christopher Golden, but this was such a great first issue that it made me want to jump into book. Great art by Ben Stenbeck and plenty of supernatural mayhem. A

Flight Vol 7- I think at this point we can safely assume that every volume of Flight will be fantastic and that we should always read them. That being said, this volume was really really really really good. Besides the usual contributions from the like of Michel Gagne and Kazu Kibuishi, we get another awesome instalment of Kenneth Shuri by JP Ahonen. I would love it if we could get a full book just about Kenneth, the ninja father trying to keep a steady job to support his family, but I’ll settle for the awesomeness in this volume. The Jellaby contribution to this volume is great, and the story ‘Live Bait’ by Justin Gerard showcases some beautiful art. ‘Career Day’ by Bannister and Grimaldi shined through and offers a great short story. ‘King of Beasts’ by Paul Harmon left me wanting more, like a whole series of books more. Beautiful stories, great art, worth every penny. A+

Time Bomb #1- It kind of feels like most Radical books are mostly stories they hope will be made into movies. Short miniseries with a catchy premise, this one being a Nazi biological death bomb goes off and the government sends a group of specialist into the past to prevent it from ever launching. And there’s nothing really wrong with it feeling like a movie pitch I suppose, other than it feels a little obvious. Palmiotti and Gray put together a decent script, although so far they haven’t done anything to separate most of the main characters from each other or to make any of them likable, which isn’t a requirement but it might help make the two white guys feel like different characters. And yeah, it's just white guy, white guy, black guy, and sexy girl. Some easy to fill roles, just toss a couple popular actors in there and don't worry about fleshing out the character too much.

Driver For the Dead #1- Radical is pushing their new titles pretty hard as of late and while I honestly am not a fan of their overall in-house style (I would describe it as needlessly digitally enhanced) I do have to say they have been offering some intriguing books. John Heffernan offers up a fun supernatural thriller series here following a hearse driver who deals with paranormal deliveries. Now I really like Leonardo Manco’s material, especially when he was doing Deathlok, Werewolf By Night, and Blaze of Glory for Marvel. He has a really sharp dirty style that just breaths atmosphere and character. And while his art is nice here, I personally feel it’s lost it’s edge with all the painting and digital facelifting here. It’s still high end and solid art, I just feel like it got neutered a little. Despite that, this was a fun read with good art.

Thor The Mighty Avenger #2- I’m going to go ahead and just say this is straight up the best new series Marvel is publishing and that you need to be reading it because it is awesome and made of all things good. Great story, great art, great sense of humor, great great great. A+

Green Arrow #2- A bit of a pick up from the first issue, but it’s perhaps a little too grounded in all the Brightest Day stuff for anybody just checking it out for Green Arrow. It felt like an incredibly fast read though, so hey at least it was only $2.99. Kinda just a boring title so far though. B-
