Zombieworld COTW is an interesting mix of Mignola’s usual style of horror writing combined with Tintin style artwork with a dab of Wolverton, a little Arthur Adams, and maybe some Richard Corben tossed in for good measure. Reading sort of like a lost chapter of BPRD, the story focuses on a team of paranormal investigators confronting a Hyperborean mummy bent on summoning a horrible race of worm gods and unleashing a zombie plague on mankind. So good times for all.
If you’re a fan of Hellboy or BPRD, then your going to love this. It has the same sense of quirky humor and Lovecraftian tones one should be used to in Mignola’s work, and the art is utterly beautiful. It has a simple clean style reminiscent of Herge while at the same time it channels the ultra detailed linework of Arthur Adams and also the grotesque beauty you would get from Wolverton dreaming a Lovecraft nightmare.
If you aren’t a Mignola fan, you should still check this out if you’re a general horror or zombie fan. While the story isn’t as heavy in the zombie aspect as you would expect, it does lead into it through a much more interesting method than most usual zombie stories (if they even decide to reveal the origins of the zombies). And if you’re just not a horror /zombie fan period, then at the very least you should check out McEown’s art. It perfectly compliments the story and you get a fun package all the way through.
