Alan Moore’s Neonomicon #1- So the good news is you really don’t have to remember the story from the previous series Courtyard which came out years ago, which is great cause I’ve totally forgotten the entire thing. Which isn’t to say it was bad, but it does say it really didn’t leave a lasting impression on me which is odd for an Alan Moore series. I’ll probably pick up the new color trade and give it a good once over and reread this. For the average reader who just jumps on here, it’s a good first step into what’s probably going to be a really disturbing series. Worth checking out if you’re a Lovecraft or Moore fan. I’m only giving this a lower grade because I’m just generally not impressed with the $3.99 price tags Avatar publish everything at and then add a glut of variants to the market. Plus, the first chunk of the story is a reprint we already paid for a couple months back, proper marketing should have this first issue be affordable at $2.99. B+
Welcome To Tranquility: One Foot In The Grave #1- I really really really enjoyed the original series and it doesn’t hurt that Gail Simone is one of my favorite writers. This first issue picks up with the right momentum from the previous and offers up some good twists along the way. Do yourself a favor and pick up the original trades and jump on now since it’s only issue #1. A-
Darkwing Duck #2- This is still better than most of the other books that came out this week. Seriously. Guard flamingos. Toy bombs full of hate and wires. Robots with cowboy hats. It’s amazing. Kids need to be checking this out and parents should love the hell out of it. A
Thunderbolts #146- People who complain about this new run and Paul Cornell’s first issue of Action Comics have no soul. Just putting that out there cause I’ve actually gotten that combo of complaints from a couple people. I’m really digging on Walker’s art as well. A-
DC Universe Legacies #3- Wait so......we’re reverting back to a Silver Age timeline for DCU history now, with the JLA popping up in like the 60's, right? I’m not sure.....if that works, and that explosion your about to hear is my brain just trying to work in every DC time revision ever at the same time. Unless future issues actually try to explain Crisis time expansion/contraction, this ain’t making much sense. Nice back-up story with Dave Gibbons art though. C+
