The Man With the Getaway Face- Despite this being just a teaser and something that will be reprinted as the prologue in the next Parker adaptation The Outfit, I couldn’t pass on it simply for the oversized Darwyn Cooke art. And this is a thing of beauty, especially for only $2 with no ads. If you wanted a great sampler of a brutal crime story with amazing art then you really need to pick this up. A
Uncanny X-Men: The Heroic Age One Shot- I’ve been avoiding the X-men like the plague honestly considering they had like 2 crossovers happening at the same time that lead directly into an even larger crossover. I got the basic gist of Second Coming, so I thought I’d take a look at this since it’s Fraction writing without the horrendous Greg Land artwork. While Portacio I’m not a huge fan of, but I could get through his art. I love Steve Sanders from his work on S.W.O.R.D., and I’m liking the look of Jamie McKelvie. The sequence with Beast and Molly Hayes was great, and the overall character direction for Cyclops and Hope seemed promising. Not bad, almost makes me want to jump back in. B+
Officer Downe- If you’re in the mood for some hyper violence with some nice clean detailed art then this is the book for you. The plot is kind of thin, not bad but it really only cares about getting to the maiming and killing. I like Joe Casey a lot, and while this feels like a projects he’s really into the story isn’t the key to the entire package. It’s a concept piece that showcases a great artist, and if you take it as just that then it’s a great book. 52 pages with no adds, the $4.99 is a little steep but not bad for what you get and it has a good sense of humor. Worth checking out. B
Superman #701-Well, it came off better than the preview from #700. Straczynski does piece slice-of-life well and it’s fun to see Superman just interact with people when the world isn’t ending. On the flip side it’s a little boring, the script is a little forced in some places, and it has the potential of falling into preachy territory. The Eddy Barrows art works for it though, so it has some potential. B
Age of Reptiles: The Journey #4- God this is really pretty. Not much else to say besides what’s already been said. Delgado tells a masterful story with no scripting, the detail and linework are breathtaking, and not many people can choreograph an awesome dinosaur fight scene. A
