The Boys #40- I’ve had plenty of people say their interest in this series wanes back and forth, but I think it’s safe to say that Ennis has maintained my interest virtually every issue. It’s nice to finally see the Hugie/Annie sub-plot cross over into Butcher’s territory. On a side note, just between the Homelander’s cannibalistic tendencies, the horror over on Ennis’ last issue of Crossed, and the Luna Bros mutilating Dara over on the Sword, it was a fairly bloody week in comics.
Girl Comics #1-Had plenty of customers wary of trying this out, the $4.99 price tag didn’t help. It is completely worth it though, especially considering I would pay that much just for the Colleen Coover introduction and Lucy Knisley’s Shop Doc story. The Franklin & Valeria Richards story was really cute and featured some great art. If you like the short Punisher story by Valerie D’Orazio you should check out her Punisher Max Butterfly also out this week. Overall, great art and a great showcase for female talent in the industry.
Detective Comics #862- While I think I prefer Jock art on covers, it doesn’t detract from the story at all. I think I enjoyed the Question back-up more than the main feature though, especially the interaction between Renee and Oracle. I’ve enjoyed all the Question back ups, but honestly my goldfish like memory span has already forgotten the main back story. This is definitely a story that will benefit from being collected into a tpb.
Age of Reptiles #3- Still awesome. The coloring is a little muddy and it can make it difficult to make out the linework at times, but still a very beautiful and detailed story.
The Last Days of Animal Man TPB- If you just want a fun quick ‘What If’ alternate future storyline, this is worth checking out. I’ve always liked Chris Batista’s clean art style, and Gerry Conway offers up a solid script. Set in 2024, Buddy Baker is slowly losing his power and experience a middle age crisis, unsure of his identity and realizing what his life as a super-hero has cost his family. If you’ve enjoyed the Morrison era of Animal Man as well as the 52 adventures with Adam Strange and Starfire, then you should enjoy this.
The Mighty Thor by Dan Jurgens Vol 2- The conclusion to the Dark Gods story Jurgens set up for an entire year ends on a high note, featuring some awesome battle scenes courtesy of John Romita Jr and some guest art by John Buscema. The last issue included is the Thor ‘99 Annual featuring a solid Dr. Doom story dealing the missing time between Heroes Reborn and Heroes Return that was pencilled by Jurgens and inked by Klaus Janson.
