Why You Should Know It:A prequel to the Star Trek franchise relaunch, this volume collects the four issue mini-series that reveals the details behind the destruction of Vulcan and the start of Nero and Spock's journey that takes them back in time.
This volume has double appeal for both old fans and new, giving some extra background for people who are just interested in the new movie continuity or playing around with some of the Next Generation characters for longtime readers/viewers. It's a great package, if a little pricey. $17.99 isn't horrible, it's just pushing it a little for four issues worth. The paper is glossy and the printing is nice, so not a huge deal
Personal Review:I kind of flip flop on Star Trek stuff my self. While I like the shows in general, I've never felt a need to get into any books or comics on the material. I really did enjoy the new movie, so that was the main push for me to check it as well as knowing if I should really bother recommending this to other readers. It is a great companion piece to the movie, adding some additional details to the plot that while not necessary are enjoyable.
The art is solid with a good sense of pacing and storytelling. One of the problems I tend to have with art for licenced material is sometimes you lose a little of the flow in the attempt to make the characters look like the actual actors. Messina has a good balance of catching the core of character without sacrificing storytelling or style for it.
