Road Rage #1- While this wasn’t a bad comic (and it was dense which is actually not too bad for the $3.99 price tag), I really just wasn’t that interested. They note Stephen King and Joe Hill as the writers but it’s adapted by Chris Ryall, and I seriously hate it when they over hype a title with big names and deliver something short of the press. If you say it’s written by Joe Hill, I friggin’ expect it to be written by Joe Hill and I mean scripted by the guy. No offense to Ryall, but I’m not buying a book for his name. Hell, at this point I’m not buying for King’s name, I’m looking for Joe Hill. Moving away from that rant for a moment, I will say that the Nelson Daniel art is nice and a good fit for the tone of the project. You might just be pulled in by that aspect alone and not care about the details of the scripting. It’s definitely an in-house IDW style though, and I start to cringe a little when I open a book and can associate an artist with a publisher not because the artist works a lot with the publisher and I recognize this, but because I look at it and just feel like I see the same stuff from IDW all the time. So overall I’m kind of meh on this and I think it’s a toss-up depending on if you like stories about bikers getting run over by trucks or not. B-

Batwoman #6- A lot of people’s knee-jerk reaction to the art change will be to drop the title or even possibly hate on Amy Reeder, but there are a few things that need to be taken into account; first, there was no way in hell JH Williams III was going to be able to maintain an ongoing series. This is simply a necessity, because seriously look at the man’s work and you will understand. Second, Amy Reeder is a solid artist and while she can’t truly capture the same essence of Williams’ style she can capture the tone and atmosphere and infuse it with her own style. Finally, Williams and Blackman are still completely entrenched in the storytelling and plotting, so you are getting a strong continuation of story flow and continuity. This isn’t like the other DC titles where suddenly they dropped a completely different creative team on a book due to poor planning. Reeder has been lined up for this title for quite some time so I was happy to see her work finally published. My only complaint is that I think she needs to work on backgrounds and the flow of action and movement, but beyond that I thought she did a good first issue. However, giving Batwoman a practically invincible suit that allows her to be shot 15 times (including once in the head) and not even suffer too much from the impact? Mmmennhhhhehhhhhhh…….feels like Neal Adams or Larry Hama were giving ballistics lessons that day. I'm just saying, giving any member of the batfamily a free pass on bullets is sorta against the point. B+

But really, if you take numerous bullets to the knee, thighs, stomach, chest, and your goddamn antecubital fossa, that shit is going to hurt and you are not getting right back up for a fight. Regardless of your fancy armor. Also, concussion.
