Prophet #21- You have to enjoy a project that takes all of the assorted Rob Liefeld Extreme properties and boots the Liefeld out of them entirely (well, except the variant covers). This was a pretty solid first issue, sparse yet dense at the same time. It doesn’t waste time but the art is so nice and rich with detail that you slow your reading down to enjoy it. This is definitely a break out project for Simon Roy and having Brandon Graham at the writing helm doesn’t hurt for visibility. Prophet feels like a healthy mix of Heavy metal meets American Indy with a taste of manga tossed in for good measure. You could do worse than twenty-four pages of story with no advertisements for $2.99, plus you get a nice little map by Graham in the back. A

Avengers #21- Well that’s good, you start off with a nice Acuna cover prominently showcasing the arrival of Storm on the team, which is also nice because it’s about time you highlight a strong ethnic female lead character that’s actually recognizable to a random reader/shopper. And then….she appears for two pages in the entire book and is unconscious in the first page and drooling in the second page. Marvel. Marvel, we really need to have a talk. A long, long talk. With screwdrivers and acid. C+

Green Lantern Corp #5- A lot of customers have been abandoning ship on this title saying it’s not what they expected, which confuses me a little because….well, what were you expecting, really? It’s a solid sci-fi story that explores characters you usually don’t spend time with and follows a decent plot with nice art. Like, I don’t want to say you’re being too picky…..but I am and you’re just going to have to deal with it. Go cancel half the other DC 52 titles but give Tomasi a chance. Plus it’s Guy Gardner being Guy, and if anyone has that down it’s Tomasi. I also really enjoy the introduction of the Mean Machine, which is essentially inserting Stalone’s Expendables into the Green Lantern Corp. A group of the meanest, toughest, and most ornery members of the Corp? Yes please. A-

Avenging Spider-Man #3- Holy carp, Maduriera actually finished a project on time? Of course it’s only three issues long but you gotta give credit where it’s due, he almost achieved a fraction of a normal artist’s working schedule. All snarky commenting aside, this was a fun story and it ended on a great note. Now we have to suffer through Greg Land art for the next issue. I actually think the name ‘Greg Land’ roughly translates into ‘Eternal suffering for your eyes’ in some languages….. B+
