This has been a favorite hidden gem of mine for over four years now, and I try to recommend it to anybody who will listen whenever I get the chance. Current fans of Tomasi’s work on Green Lantern Corp or his run on Nightwing will want to check this out, as well as war story buffs or anyone into crusade/grail quest stories. Even if you don’t like any of the mentioned, Tomasi just creates a fantastic story that pulls you in.
Set during WWII in Germany, a small American platoon stumbles across a holy struggle as forsaken angels disguised as Nazis search for the lost sword of God in an attempt to overthrow heaven. Led by Marcus Longinus, the Roman Centurion responsible for piercing Christ’s side, the soldiers are deputized as holy warriors and seek to prevent the forsaken Nazis from destroying Heaven and Earth.
Fans of Snejbjerg's work on Starman will also enjoy this book as he again provides clean fluid art with a great visual pace. Snejbjerg is an expert at depicting horrible bloody violence without cluttering the pages too much, and his emoting and general ability to capture atmosphere compliment Tomasi’s script perfectly.
