Writer/Artist: Doug TenNapel
Publisher: Top Shelf, $14.95
Why You Should Know This:
TenNapel is the creator of Earthworm Jim, which I loved but am often surprised by how many other people actually remember it. If you remember the series at all, you might remember the odd random sense of humor and fantastic character designs. TenNapel has put out a number of GNs over the years, all of which have been great and just a lot of fun. Creature Tech is about the quest of a long dead mad scientist/necromancer to destroy the world with a giant space eel. The only people who stand in his way are a would-be pastor who is now a scientist whose body is attached to an alien symbiote, a bunch of rednecks, and a CIA-trained mantis. It's pretty awesome when you say that out loud.
One of the great things about this book is that it's pretty damn thick for just $14.95. It's a feature length GN, and TenNapel doesn't skimp at all in his storytelling so you get a lot of bang for your buck. I have trouble really comparing his work to other peoples, so recommending to new readers can be a little tricky. If you were ever a fan of Ren & Stimpy, then that's one comparison I could make. But if you just want something unique and interesting, this is a good way to go.

Personal Review:
One of the reasons I've always loved TenNapel's work is just his random craziness, both in his designs and his story telling. For example, in Creature Tech: a butcher places the Shroud of Turin on a bunch of random assorted meats on the hooks at his shop, causing the meat to resurrect into a giant meat-monster with some hams for its eyes which then runs out of the store yelling "I'M ALIVE! Life is so wonderful! I'm going on a journey to find myself!". And that is still not the weirdest part of the book. Bug heaven might be, but there are a lot of things contending for weirdest crap imaginable in this book so I just like to sit back and soak it all in.

One of the other things to take into account is that TenNapel did pretty much everything except letter the damn thing. Not many people can pull that off, so I always feel that those who can (and make it work) deserve a little bit of extra respect.
