First of all, it’s about freakin’ time. While a hardcover format isn’t ideal simply because it draws in less casual readers, Marvel did do a nice job on these and I believe they are well worth the price tags. Considering for a while there the original soft cover printings were going for over $40 a pop on Amazon and Ebay for a while, this series of hardcovers is the fastest and easiest way to read the Johns run of Avengers. I really do believe that his run was one of the best and most promising runs over the past decade, only to be shot down too early before certain plot lines could be fully realized.

Elseworlds was a fun concept DC played with that placed familiar characters in unfamiliar backgrounds, offering up some inventive and really fun stories. It felt like we used to get a bunch of Elseworld stories every other month a few years back, and I’ve missed it as a creative playground for creators.

Selina Kyle has been murdered, and Private Eye Richard Grayson gets pulled into a tangle of lies and criminal plots while attempting to find her killer. The usual criminal elements of Gotham are re-imagined as noir archetypes as Grayson has to deal with the police, the insane mob bosses, and the Bat himself who may or may not be working for a certain playboy tycoon.

Joe The Barbarian #3- Been hearing complaints that the story is a little lackluster, but so far for me it’s just been fun. It still has that quick pacing Morrison's been utilizing as of late, and it keeps you guessing as to how much of this is real and how much is a hallucination. The main push for me here is the Sean Murphy art which is utterly brilliant. If you get the opportunity, you really should check out his early work with Zach Howard on Outer Orbit. I was able to meet Howard at the Emerald City Comicon last week and talk about their work, and let’s just say I’m excited for the future.

This is a great hidden gem that came out about seven years ago and tends to get a little overlooked among the tons and tons of Batman material available. Does anyone else really miss Elseworlds? It was a bit overdone to be sure, but I wouldn’t think it would hurt to release one new story every once in a while, especially if the result was half as great as this book.

The Boys #40- I’ve had plenty of people say their interest in this series wanes back and forth, but I think it’s safe to say that Ennis has maintained my interest virtually every issue. It’s nice to finally see the Hugie/Annie sub-plot cross over into Butcher’s territory. On a side note, just between the Homelander’s cannibalistic tendencies, the horror over on Ennis’ last issue of Crossed, and the Luna Bros mutilating Dara over on the Sword, it was a fairly bloody week in comics.
